A 4-Day Course in Confident Speech, Presence & Expression

There's usually a gap between how clearly you think and how clearly you come across. Between the version of yourself in a conversation that goes well and the version that shows up when the stakes feel slightly higher. This course works in that gap.

Over four Sunday afternoons in Amsterdam, actress and theatre-maker Caro Derkx works with a small group — never more than ten people — on the full range of how you communicate: voice, language, movement, presence, and the written word.

The course has nothing to do with presentation frameworks or eye contact tips. The work is closer to what an actor does in training: learning to be present, specific, and at ease with your own expression — and then finding out what that makes possible in daily life, in professional settings, in any situation where you want to be heard and actually are.

How it works

Four sessions, each three hours, each building on the previous one. The work is practical throughout — speaking, writing, moving, listening, performing short pieces of your own text.

Day 1 | Speech Refinement & Linguistic Sensitivity

SEP 27 | 15:00 - 18:00

Focus: Precision, clarity, and expressive language

You’ll begin by developing awareness of how you speak — and how small changes in articulation, rhythm, and word choice can transform communication.

You’ll work on:

  • Speaking clearly and confidently

  • Exploring rhythm, tone, and melody in speech

  • Understanding how language shapes meaning and perception

  • Storytelling techniques that make speech engaging

Through guided exercises, you’ll start refining your speech to sound more intentional, expressive, and grounded.

OCT 4 | 15:00 - 18:00

Focus: Body language, presence, and vocal expression

Communication goes far beyond words. On Day 2, you’ll explore how posture, movement, breath, and voice work together.

You’ll work on:

  • Awareness of posture, gestures, and facial expression

  • Using movement and stillness to hold attention

  • Training the voice for projection and emotional range

  • Reading and responding to non-verbal cues

The goal is alignment — so what you say matches how you say it.

OCT 11 | 15:00 - 18:00

Focus: Personal expression and performance

On Day 3, you’ll turn inward and work with your own words.

You’ll explore:

  • Writing short personal texts (including letter-writing exercises)

  • Developing a distinct written and spoken voice

  • Techniques for performing personal material

  • Using rhythm, pacing, and emphasis to bring text to life

This day is about ownership — speaking from your own experience with clarity and confidence.

OCT 25 | 15:00 - 18:00

Focus: Bringing your voice into daily and professional life

The final day is about integration. You’ll focus on using everything you’ve learned naturally and sustainably.

You’ll work on:

  • Applying speech techniques in social and professional settings

  • Speaking with confidence without overthinking

  • Letting go of speech anxiety and embracing spontaneity

  • Integrating voice, body, and storytelling into daily communication

By the end of the course, you’ll have practical tools — and a deeper trust in your own voice.

What you leave with

Twelve hours of practice in a small group led by a working artist at the top of her field. The course ends with a session focused entirely on taking everything you've learned into the situations that actually matter to you — conversations, rooms, professional settings, moments that used to feel harder than they should.

12 hours across four weeks. Maximum 10 participants. Amsterdam.
